A calm first response to a questionable tape

What to inspect, what not to play, and when separating one item can protect the rest of the shelf.

Stop before playback

Do not put a suspicious cassette into a working VCR. Look through the clear windows in strong light without opening the shell. Note fuzzy, web-like, or irregular deposits; unusual odor; debris; warped reels; and damaged tape edges.

Isolate without spreading debris

Place the item away from the main collection in a clean, dry location. Avoid brushing, blowing, or vacuuming the cassette indoors. If several items came from the same damp environment, inspect the group separately.

Decide based on importance and uncertainty

A valuable commercial release or irreplaceable family recording is a good reason to contact a preservation or tape-transfer professional. If you cannot confidently identify the problem, uncertainty is enough reason not to play it.

The goal is not to diagnose everything at home. The goal is to prevent one uncertain item from becoming a damaged machine or a larger collection problem.

KEEP BROWSING

Put the story beside the collection.
